The School Board of Trustees has the overall responsibility for the school, including certain legal obligations, responsibility for property, personnel, financial management, reporting to the Ministry and school community and meeting national requirements set by the Ministry of Education. The Charter and Mission Statement of every school reflects local needs and priorities. School Boards set strategic goals, develop and review policies, monitor performance of the staff and of the Principal and ensure effective curriculum delivery.
While the ultimate authority for the school system rests with the Ministry of Education, other stakeholders have key roles in the delivery of education. Parents and caregivers, students, Principals, and staff all contribute as members of the partnership through the Board of Trustees.
The Orewa College Board of Trustees believes that:
- Every student is entitled to a comprehensive education of the highest possible quality;
- Education is not only gaining knowledge, but learning to think and learn independently;
- Such an education requires full consideration to be given to differences in the abilities, interests and aspirations of students while at the same time being equitable to all;
- The school must provide a safe, attractive and supportive environment which is conducive to learning and teaching;
- Learning is most effective when high expectations and demands are placed upon students to achieve to the full extent of their ability;
- Every student should have access to a broad range of activities beyond the classroom;
- Effective education requires partnership between teaching staff, students and parents/caregivers;
- The achievements of both students and staff must be affirmed and reinforced;
- The sense of self-worth and pride gained from achievement leads to the desire for further learning and success;
- The ability and desire for lifelong learning provides a foundation for responsible and effective citizenship.
