Purchasing an iPad or One to One Computing Device

We have been approached by many businesses with various offers for purchasing one to one devices.  Below are links to details of the offers worthy of your consideration.  Please note that they are only valid at the store/branch mentioned.  These offers do not all relate specifically to iPads so if you choose to purchase something other than an iPad, please read and consider the following...

One of the many realities of computing in a school environment is that students require a highly portable device with a very long battery life.  Students must carry their device from class to class every hour and will not be able to rely on having an opportunity to recharge their battery during the day.  In addition to this, students one to one device must also be wireless capable, have a good warranty and be robust which often means the build quality of the device should be high.

This is all a significant part of the reasoning behind the Orewa College recommendation of an iPad.  We see the iPad as the best value for money in terms of the above requirements.

However, if you do not wish to purchase an iPad specifically, then the computer (one to one device) you do choose to buy needs to satisfy the above.  Anything less than this will be false economy.

Please note:  Some of the listed companies require Student ID in order to purchase a computing device at best rates for Orewa College.  If your student is going to be new to our school, and does not have Student ID, please contact the Main Office for a letter confirming their enrolment.

Concerning Android Tablets. Android is great but there is a huge variation in quality of hardware - hardware is machine that the Android operating system runs on. We have one recommendation for an Android device if you choose to go the Android way. If you choose another Android device, please compare the specifications of what you choose to our recommendation.  Click here for more information.

The most commonly asked question is:  My son/daughter already has a laptop/netbook, do I now have to go out and buy an iPad?  The answer is No - certainly not.  What you do have to ensure is that they bring that device to school next year.

The school has High Speed Internet via a fibre connection and is 90% covered wirelessly.

While the school has some 400 computers in PODs, Labs, Classrooms, and the Library. Access to ICT for prolonged periods of time is difficult, as demand is very high.
