NZ Motocross Champions
Aiden Kiff, Logan Beuth, Cameron Blackie, Tyler McEwan and Josh Jack (since left Orewa College) competed in the 2010 New Zealand Intermediate and Secondary Schools Motocross Championship and won the Teams’ Trophy for 1st place overall.
The event was held on 2 May at the Ardmore Motocross Park in Auckland. Over 250 riders entered, with 102 teams competing for the schools’ teams trophies. The points were scored right back to 40th place in every race, so every rider’s placing in whatever class they rode counted, making it a real team effort.
This event has evolved over the last 11 years to become established as the longest running one day Junior Motocross in New Zealand, and one of New Zealand’s premier motocross events.
Most of New Zealand’s world championship riders started out riding as juniors while they were still at school, so recognition they receive from their school for achievements plays a very important role in the future of NZ Motocross.

Orewa Has Got Talent
Does Orewa College have talent? It most certainly does.
Thursday 26 March saw the inaugural Orewa College Talent Show which was a fundraising event for Stage Challenge. With 42 acts on the programme the evening promised to be lively and entertaining. Students from Years 7 to 13 danced, sang, performed skits, bands played and the audience participated with much hand clapping, arms waving and roars of delight.
Callum Marra and Jack Matthews were the hosts of the evening, often interspersing the acts with their own humour whilst the judges had a chance to mark the acts.
The intermission saw a fine display of home baking for sale and raffle tickets to be sold, and the evening was rounded off by the Staff Band. It was a huge success raising approx. $1700 for the Stage Challenge team.
Our thanks go to our judges: Mr Marshall, Mr Rainey, Ms Rivers and Mikayla Wright, and a very big thank you to our evening’s sponsors: North Harbour Law, Navarjo Hair Design, Orewa New World and to Kathy Duncan our Nutrimetics Sponsor.

Soap Box Derby 2010
Orewa College students entered the 2010 Trolley Derby held on Saturday 27 March in Brightside Road, Stanmore Bay. Our trolley, kindly sponsored by Bayes Coachlines, had been newly repainted by Mr Pearce and was really looking hot.
The drivers, Adrian Vasiljevic, Kirk Piggott, Jack Reid and Isabella Pickering, showed skill and determination but unfortunately we were not quite fast enough to make the finals. Well done to all who were involved.

Blake House Christmas Assembly
The final assembly for Blake House this year was characterised by tinsel, elves and 1980s Cliff Richard songs - all in the spirit of the festive season. Blake held a gift service collecting presents and gifts for the Child Cancer foundation. Students from Years 7-10 all contributed a small Christmas gift which will be handed out to children supported by the foundation, on Christmas day. The generosity of students and staff was fantastic to see, and will ensure some children have a slightly better Christmas due to the kindness of others.

Influenza Information
Notice to Parents (from the Ministry of Health) regarding the Influenza like illness: The best things you can do to stop the spread of any type of influenza virus are to:
• stay at home and away from others if you are sick
• cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue
• put used tissues into a rubbish bin
• avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth – germs spread that way
• be careful to wash hands often with soap and dry them thoroughly – hand hygiene is critical: even when you start to feel better there is still a risk of infecting others, so keep to the 20/20 rule – 20 seconds washing and 20 seconds drying
• keep surfaces clean at home, school and work.
